My interest in the Brixton Orphanage for Fatherless Girls started after finding in an old suitcase of my Mothers an almost complete set of the Guild of Perseverence journals dating from its beginnings in 1919 to when the school closed in 1936. My Mother Annie Alexandra Cotsford was a pupil at the school from 1909 to 1918.
Until 1928 each girl on arrival at the school was given a 'school name', this was to avoid any two girls having the same christian name. This may have made life easier for the school but has caused some confusion on the Guild List so please let me know if you can correct or fill in any missing names.
Although this was an orphanage there is no doubt from both my Mothers memories and letters sent to the Guild Papers that it was a very caring and loving environment where the girls were not only given a good basic education but were also taught by example high standards of morality, honesty and to care and help others less fortunate than them selves.
